Scoring: MP

Had this in a club pair game yesterday

Further partnership agreements were forcing NT (with 3card support when without shortness possible), 2/1 GF or a good rebiddable suit, Hardy raises.

I will add p's hand later

Can't pass that. 1Sp seems obvious to me without regard of scoring or vulnerability. What's the worst that could happen? Misfit. In such case, however, both minor honors get fully evaluated, so we merely opened on 11 pts. Nothing improper or out of the ordinary.

One thing I won't do is open 1H, though. No matter that the strength there is better. As I won't be inclined to make a reverse, I'll have to repeat the hearts, and never show the Boss suit.

Yes you can pass that. And should probably playing 2/1. If I must open, then 1.

would pass playing standard systems
(please note, I think that its losing bridge to be forced to pass such hands, which is why I don't pay "standard" systems)

If I were forced to open 1M, I'd chose 1

Bidding went:
1-p-1NT-2
2-3-4-p
p-5-5...

P held
Scoring: MP
.

We were in a good sacrifice against 5, with the only bad thing being that half of the field played 4-1 :-(.

I don't recall exact hands of opponents, but my LHO definitely had 4 small diamonds and heart void + AK in spades...

My p took a long time before his 5 bid, but having read and understood LOTT, made the right decision.

So on this hand it doesn't really matter if you open or not; partner will pre-empt in hearts in third seat anyway.

Hi,

I am torn between passing and opening.
If I open, I would open 1S.

With kind regards

I would if I could, but I can't, so I won't. :D

My English is getting better every day now.

I don't think that passing is wrong, btw, and I won't mind if my partner passes such hand. It's more a matter of personal style whether to open here.

1S with no problem except if vul vs not in second seat in an imp scored event. (too many chances to go wrong)

Reverse the majors and I would gladly open 1S, but I don't want to stretch to open such a bad suit.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I open light, but I have to admit to passing in all but third chair if this was my hand.

Is the concept of a "biddable suit" (headed at least by an honour, i.e. not the 9) still in vogue?

If so, 1 seems best (assuming one wishes to bid). With a 4-card suit partner will show it at the one level, and if not, the suit's probably not all that great.

Pass, unless I have an opening for weak hands with both Majors...

I pass... but then, I never win at matchpoints, and maybe this is an example of why ;)

Showing the example hand makes no difference, and building a bidding style on random 'at the table' holdings is a sure way to lose. And, in any event, who here would pass partner's actual hand in 3rd chair?

In the meantime, if you open 1 and the opps get to any contract played by LHO, ask how you feel while awaiting the opening lead. Or how you feel if partner doubles them in a low-level contract and confidently leads his Kx, etc, etc.

I have never had a partner who did not appreciate me holding the hand I showed in the auction, and if I opened 1 on this, I'd want to hide my cards later.

As for 1, I'd perpetrate that in 3rd or 4th, but not in 1st or 2nd.
