Can anyone give me a detailed summary about answers after a 1NT-Comic overcall??

For those who don't know what Comic-1NT is, it contains 2 types of hands:
- an unknown length (normally 6-card) and weak
- a normal 1NT-opening of 15-17 HCP

In some circles this treatment is also referred to as Gardener 1NT (WBF Level 3 eligible but ACBL Mid-Chart here). I recommend downloading Meckstroth-Rodwell's WBF CC (including the supplemental notes) - they have a pretty good explaination of this treatment. Go to EcatsBridge at http://www.ecatsbridge.com.

It's too bad that it's not allowed at most events here in ACBL land; I for one rather like it. ;D

In our region, it's a standard convention, but almost nobody plays it :) ;D

Gardener 1NT standard

Gardener 1NT overcall - version Meckwell
1CDHS
1DHS=NF,5+cd
Cue=Michael

2NT=Ogust conv. incl. values
Fav:1NT=Gardner
2C=Stayman
2DH=Trans
2S=minors/show str

2NT=14-18
3CDHS=Weak,long

I often play Gardener 1NT overcall. As usual strange bids has a tendency to pay off very well. Not because the efficiency of the feature but simply because it is strange to most opps. Everything but simple 5 card overcalls seems to be too advanced to be understood as well by partner as by opps.

The Italians, Bocchi and Duboin play it this way.
1NT is only comic over 1m, and it always shows a weak M or 15-18
Now 2C is staymanic -
over this 2D = some weak 2 in a M, 2H/S = 15-16 4 carders, 2NT = 15-16 no M, 3 level bids show max with the M

Other bids over 1NT are transfers, refuse to accept ransfer ONLY if holding a s/t in partner's suit.

I play this and its fun.

There are some continuations with other bids that make The_Hog's version more interesting...

Over 1m a 2D overcall in Intermediate in a Major.
The only thing I wasn't all that sure of, is what you do with a 6 card major and partner Staymans. What are the continuations? Do you show a six card suit somehow? Or Does partner guess? Is there a risk that partner guesses badly and you miss slam?

Just some thoughts.

Chronos.

Partner does not stayman. The first 2C bid is an enquiry as to hand type
Now
2D I have a weak 2 in a M
2H 15-16 4H
2S 15-16 4S
2N 15-16, no M
3? Shows that suit and a max NT overcall

Over 2D above 2H = Pass/correct
2S = art enquiry

It's not that hard to find out, and you shouldn't miss. After (1X) - 1NT - p - 2C - p - 2D, it's like you opened 2D-multi. And otherwise you bid a 4-card M or 2NT without a 4-card M.

Maybe the 3X answers should be left out, but I don't know for sure. It can be good, but it can go wrong either...

Well seems like there're many variations, I'll post mine and free will have plenty of options to choose :-)

After a comic 1NT
2c = Asking bid, pd will pass/correct with the weak one suited hand or
bid their suit (cue) with the 15-17 nt.
Cue = Asking bid, pd bids 2nt with 15-17 or his suit with a weak one suited.
Others = Natural and to play even if pd has a strong nt.
2n = INV if pd has a 15-17 nt, otherwise pull to 3x.

Tony Nunn and i play the comic no-trump and we play
1NT = 15-18 or weak single suited or weak two suited.
The overcaller is hereon termed the "Comedian"

2C = non forcing stayman
Comedian may pass with Cs. Else
Cue of their suit = 15-16,has major,then nat
Others = natural, one or two suited
2NT = 15-16, no major
3C = 17-18, no major
3D = 17-18, both majors
3M = 17-18 , that major
2D/H = non forcing transfers
Comedian may pass if his suit
2S = forcing relay. Then
2NT = two suited (Now 3C ask, CRO resp)
3X = natural
3 of their suit = 15-18 ( they psyched ??)

But the two most important things to discuss are
a) What to do if they double 1NT
:) How to compete if they make a bid and distinguish between the weak and strong hands

a)We play everything as natural although i am sure there is a better treatment. If advancer passes the double, we play comedian's redouble as two suited.

B) If they bid. for example
(1D) - 1NT - (2H) - ?
Here , double acts as an enquiry and the comedian will bid 2NT to show strong hand else natural

We played the comic notrump in Australia's best and toughest event, the NOT in January.
I must admit that it worked far more effectively against the weaker players. Once we start playing the tougher opponents, it is no longer a nuclear bomb.
But its fun, and so we use it.
