Of course they are. If people weren't fooled by psyches and false-cards, they wouldn't be used in the first place.

The Turing test doesn't require the computer to emulate a smart human, just an ordinary one. In fact, it would still be a major achievement just to get a computer to fool you into thinking it's a 10-year-old kid.

If I partner myself against Jack it's easy to psych him out. Just bid his suit then run to my own suit.

A pair playing against 2 GIBS could play HUMs and that would probably psych them out.

Installed the bots yesterday and already had a lot of fun. I keep thinking that BBO can't get any better and every time you guys prove how wrong I am. Great site!

The bots feel a need on BBO, for sure. They fill in while waiting for a fiend. They don't play a horrible game of bridge. They don't play PERFECT of course. I had this (MisIry) hand today and I am certain the bot blew the play.

The BOT went down by playing a line that required 2-2 clubs or EAST has club KJx and diamonds no worse than 4-2. This was doubly sad, as only four out of 16 tables found the slam (yes it is biddable without MisIry), and my bot was only declearer in clubs not to take 12 tricks.

While 6C is easily reachable without MisIry, MisIry would have been...

6C - Pass

(5S = cuebid at five level, shows value)
6C = if I was interested in spade king, I would have bid 5NT to ask

If south only bids 3H (wimpy in my view), the auction woudl have been very similar

I recall back in the days where I played on the Zone (before setting up BBO, and then forgetting my password on my Zone account (so I can't play there anymore)), I remember the Bots. There were good for waiting on players and reserving seats while waiting for particular players while not delaying play. And, some players prefer to play alone with Bots.

That being said, I don't know about BBO's new bots, but the Bots on the Zone did not bid/play perfectically. Also, it seems so easy to cheat against bots. You can always bid 7NT and claim.

I don't mind playing computer opponents in Chess, but I prefer human partners and opponents in Bridge. That's my opinion. However, there are some good in Bots, like being able to play before having four players arrive at your table, or reserving seats for particular players without delaying play, or just for some good old-fashioned fun practice.

I just hope there aren't too many tainted IMP scores in the MBC because of people bidding and claiming 7NT (even when they don't have the majority of HCP).

From what I can tell, it plays 3 weak 2s, 2/1 game force and Cappelletti vs 1NT. This I've ascertained from asking for information about its bids.

Also, on defense it gives current count quite faithfully (as my partner at least). I wonder if the declaring bots know this and take that into account in their simulations.

What form of Jacoby Transfers does it play? I just got a hand with a long diamond suit, GIB opened 1NT, and I wasn't sure how to transfer to it.

I switched seats with GIB to see what it did, but it decided to pass.

This is just one of GIB's CCs. Other systems that it plays are Acol, Kaplan- Sheinwold, Moscito Byte, Traditional and Standard with Gadgets (a 2/1 system).

A lot of development with considerable help from the GIB community went into Standard with Gadgets and I hope that this is the CC that Fred has chosen.

Having said that, GIB development has been dead for two years and I can't see it being resurrected unless Matt Ginsberg is prepared to do some more work . From what I understand the GIB program and bidding database are so complex that no one else can carry out even simple mods to correct known bidding bugs.

If you use GIB, you just have to realise that not everything will be perfect and it would seem that if you find suspect bids/ or plays you just have to live with them

I'm pretty sure that's not the CC being used by the bots. They use New Minor Forcing, which isn't checked on that CC.
