Any chance of a "true" individual tourney with GIB

Interesting feature with GIB in 4.35.

I was wondering, if the software permits, it would be interesting -- I'd certainly be willing to pay for the experience -- if BBO could offer a "true" individual in which e.g. every entrant sat south -- all other seats played by GIB. So every entrant would have the experience of playing with, and against, effectively identically skilled players...

Could also do the same with pairs, but unusual partnership bidding methods would probably cause problems, so a "true" individual seems more feasible.

Couple comments that I think are worth mentioning.

#1. I definitely agree that using GIB for individual tournaments sounds like an interesting endevour. I'm not sure how cost effective it would be, however, it does sound interesting. One option is the aforementioned 3 GIBs partnering a human who always plays South. Another would be to have humans sitting North and East with GIBs sitting South and West.

#2. Its important to note that GIB's "thought" process is based on Monte Carlo simulation. GIB is not deterministic. Rather, it randomly deals a large number of hands and decides what the best line of play would be based on the particular cards. Its entirely possible that 2 GIBsthat are faced with the indentical bidding/play problem will reach very different decisions. I don't think that there is anything wrong with this, however, I do think that players need to be aware of of this...

Is there some way for BBO to provide the seed to GIB's random number generator, so that all the GIBs playing the same hand would start out with the same random sequence? That way it *would* be deterministic as long as the bidding and play up to a point are the same.

Another issue is that, unless we put all of the GIB processing on our server, people with faster computers will have an advantage in this sort of tournament.

Also, some people might jiggle with the GIB setting... making their opponent gibs play at blinding speed, and their play slow.

One advantage is no rounds if only one player per table.. Playem as you get em....that would solve teh speed problem... each table goes as fast as the human desires I guess... Now with two players per table... :-)

I'd be surprised if Fred exposed this option.

It might be possible to replicate the desired functionality by using processor intensive applications, however, this seems a bit extreme...

I did take some steps to make it difficult for people to tamper with GIB, but I am sure there are hackers around who could find a way to bypass these measures. Most likely I will have to do more to prevent this for some of the GIB-based BBO applications that we have in mind.

The commercial version of GIB has a slider set up to determine how much thinking GIB will do, on the GIB forums there was always debate as to wether or not this really had an effect on the overall play of GIB...and sometimes people found out that setting to think more even with a faster processor didnt really speed things up tended to slow things down....but this was all about the time PIV intel processors first came out. the GIB mail server list has pretty dead now for about 2 yrs now ;)
