I was doing some coaching in the bidding room when this came up. East seemed to have upgraded their hand somewhat.

Good bidding by East. Only great programming can come up with innovative bidding like this. Most players don't have the imagination to get to 4♥

Here is an example of the proper use of 2NT in this case to make a slam try in spades.
Unfortunately south was not aware and passed a forcing 3♠
