2 passes, and RHO opens 1H

You have

AQ985
Q
QT984
A4

P bids 3S

Pass Pass 1H 1S
Pass 3S Pass ?

Do you bid 4S?

Would your bidding be affected if by the rating of the player - e.g. would you expect a UCB from an expert player.

TIA
M.

1 No. 2. No, but I assume I've covered this in initial discussion. If you're playing pickup, good luck guessing. No matter which way you guess, if you're wrong, partner will claim it was obvious he was doing [whatever] because it's the only meaning for that bid he knows.

I have no idea what a UCB is, but I expect "preemptive jumps in competition" from everyone I play with, unless we've actually discussed it; and 2 to be (or include) the strong raise.

"We need two kings for game" - you don't have it if I bid 3.

I might be North-American biased.

For me 3S is preemptive, e.g.
Kxxx
xxxx
x
XXXX

There are pluses for the preemptive approach in that it puts the pressure on the 1H bidder, but it is also true that they sometimes find their 4H fit

UCB is the Unassuming CueBid. e.g. bidding 3H in this sequence is constructive - a sound raise to 3S.
Agreed, 3S would be preemptive

Responder had
Kxxx
xxxx
A
Kxxx

Which for me falls somewhere between a 3/4 S raise.

Right. So partner thought limit raises were on in competition or over overcalls. This is not unusual, and was what I was implying in my first statement.

I happen to disagree that that is the right way to play. Seems you do, too.

Partner's response will be "why didn't you go? I showed a good hand".

To me, this is an automatic 2 call. I'll go on pretty much any game try, and cater to partner's actual hand of QJ9xx and a king, or AQxxx and out (call me a pessimist). 3 looks more like Kxxx x xxxx xxxx. 4 looks like Kxxxx xxx x xxxx.

With an unknown partner / no detailed agreement, yes.

With an experienced / strong partner, probably not (no 2H bid)

Like Mycroft, over RHO's 1, I prefer a 2 Michaels overcall :(
Now, 4 seems sensible, no matter whether 3 is constructive or pre-emptive :)
With agreement, I would expect
- 2N with a constructive 4-card raise.
- 2 with a constructive 3-card raise.

Ah, I was unclear. I don't like 2 Michaels; too much of my stuff is outside for my liking. I like 1. But with the A, A, K 4414 I'm responding 2 "assume it's a big raise". Then opener, with a real hand, can make a game try, and I will accept (pretty much anything, frankly).
