GIB holds QJT9-765-J43-652.
Partner opens 1d as dealer, r/w.
Pass-pass, GIB's LHO balances with 1S.
Partner doubles and next hand passes.
Quiz time: What does GIB bid?

Hint: it would have been my 5th or even 6th choice although I suppose 4th choice is arguable.

GiB seems to think that Opener needs a powerhouse to compete in this situation, so maybe 2N as a natural invite? :)

I don't have a bidding box handy, but I would shuffle the bidding cards, cut the deck of bidding cards, and then pick the 3rd bidding card off the top of the deck. That's for basic bots. I have a more sophisticated method for advanced bots.

I would bid 1NT. My guess is that it passed.

Bot's partner doubled followed by a pass & it's the bot's call; the option to double does not exist.

I can imagine only 5 choices
1. 2
2. 1N
3. Pass
4. 2
5. 2
So I guess 2

Nigel's five choices are in the same order as mine :) So the robot bid 2cl.

GIB often passes t/o dbls when in doubt but not this time.

Time for another pub quiz:

GIB holds, as dealer,
AKJx-Qxxx-xx-Kxx

The auction goes, uncontested:
1-1
1-1*
?
*FSF
What did GIB call?
Hint: I think GIB's call would have been my 9th choice or thereabouts.

2D. It's got some support for your suit and I think 1S may actually deny 4 in GIB's system.

9th best choice is a pretty big call, so I'm guessing it's going to be even less "logical" than 2D though.

Knowing GIB, I would expect a 3 bid, but I'd probably rank that 4th behind 1N, 2S, and 3N. I'm struggling to even think of potential bids that get me up to 9 though.

GIB refuses to bid NT for some reason so, I'm pretty sure the response wasn't some number of notrump. It probably thinks a spade raise here means something other than four card support so it probably didn't bid some number of spades. It wouldn't rebid its three card club suit so that leaves rebidding its four card heart suit or showing its two card diamond support. I'm going with 2D but it's a coin toss for me between those two.

Yeah, you know GIB better than I. 3 it is.

I took it as showing some 4414 or 4405 with significant extras so I bid 7 (in a 4-3 fit) which made due to a very friendly layout.

I ranked
1NT-normal
2-possibly normal, at least only off by one card and maybe practical for right-siding 3NT?
2-odd but not terribly misdescribing, and maybe practical for right-siding 3NT
2-at least doesn't distort the strength
2-idem
2NT-at least murky, and doesn't distord the shape much
3NT-idem
3-idem, more or less
3-my 9th choice

But probably 3 is less terrible than 3. Then again, maybe pass is better than 3: if we are going to ruin the board anyway we may as well go for a plus score. And sometimes opps will balance.
