Should west bid 1 instead of 1 d. Un general is it better to bid 4 card major first or lower rank 4 card suit?

What system are you playing ? Also your auction is simply 3 passes to east, so what auction are we talking about.

Most people I know play 11-14 for a 4th seat NT even if they play strong in 1-3 so I'd open 1N.

If you're asking about 1-X- if you open a lot of 11s I'd redouble which would then be 9-10 by a passed hand.

Like CY, I would open the East hand 1NT. After a 1 opening, with or without a double, I would respond 1 playing a majors-first-if<GF system like Acol, 2/1, etc but 1 playing an up-the-line system like Forum D or SEF. The problem with a redouble is that our short suit is spades and that can leave us poorly placed if the auction turns into a part score battle while we are unlikely to be able to extract anything if partner is big and balanced.

Happy New Year everyone!

Maris Oren "Should west bid 1 instead of 1 d. In general is it better to bid 4 card major first or lower rank 4 card suit?"
++++++++++++++++++++

Are we discussing the auction on the left? If so, I rank:
1. 1 = NAT. It seems better to investigate a fit without leaking other information or coping with possible pre-emption by opponents.
2. 1 = NAT.

The thread title suggests double rather than pass by S

If South doubled then West's hand loos like a redouble.
In absence of a double it depends on partnership agreement
