We have a group of around 30 pairs, of quite wide ranging abilities from novices to intermediates, who have been playing on BBO in a competitive league where each pair plays all the other pairs, 12 or 16 boards per match over a set period. Their league position at any point in time is determined by their average IMPs per board played over the season to date. We have been using the score window (top left on PC screens) to determine the final score, 10 seconds after the final trick is won/lost, because there have been one or two problems with the Hand Record system recently.

We are moving to a 'ladder' system, where a pair can challenge any other pair three or fewer places above them, and if they win the leapfrog the losers and every pair below gets displaced by one position. So the only important factor is who won and who lost the match. It has been suggested that we should move from IMPs scoring to match point scoring, the argument being that over 12-16 boards this is a fairer way of determining who has won with such a wide range in abilities, because a with IMPs the presence or absence of a few random 'big' hands can have a disproportionate effect - good players are more likely to bid and make tricky slams and get BIG IMPs scores. One or two of these early on in a match can be very disheartening to weaker players.

So, should we move to scoring by Match Points or stick with IMPs? It sounds logical but as I don't really understand how BBO scoring works, I thought it would be a good idea to check with the experts.

Also, in the league, a 0.1 IMP + or - total for a match is neither here or there as we are measuring Average IMPs / board over the season, but it can make the difference between moving up the ladder or staying put. So we will use the Hand Record facility to determine the result of a match (backed up by manually recording the score shown on the screen at the match, in case the Hand record system fails).

So, will the match record be available immediately after the match, or should we wait for 15 minutes or so while results of other pairs playing our boards are in?
