How frustrating it is to see *Brad sign on and then 10 seconds later ‘blink’ he’s invisible! I wonder if we will have the privilege of seeing some pre Bermuda Bowl matches.

I’m excited already, I was hooked after the dramatic finish of the 2004 (2003 sorry, seems like yesterday) Bermuda Bowl seen here live on vugraph! “a card touched is a card played”

And can someone tell me, how do the teams decide which pairs to play, are they free to play any pair or are there some restrictions?

A mere detail, I know, but the last Bermuda Bowl (Venice Cup and Senior Bowl too) was actually in the autumn of 2003 and took place in Monaco.

Most of the teams will have 6 players made up of 3 partnerships. Only 4 team members play at any given time and the team has complete freedom to play whatever players they want whenever they want.

However, there is a minimum board requirement for each of the phases (round robin, quarter-final, semi-final, final) of the event. If a given player on a given team does not play enough boards to meet the board requirement, he/she will not be officially considered part of the team in various ways (no WBF masterpoints and no title of "world champion", but I think such people still get to keep a gold/silver/bronze medal).

For most events (including the Bermuda Bowl), the board requirement is somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the boards in each phase of the event.

Historically most USA teams have had a playing sponsor and the sponsors tend to play the minimum required number of boards. I doubt that this will be the case with my team since of "sponsor pair" (Ekeblad-Rubin) are a very strong pair.

Typically teams have a "non-playing captain" or (NPC) and one of the main jobs of this person is to decide which pairs play when. Some NPCs enlist the opinions of the players themselves when making lineup decisions.

Hi,

It is always very interesting to experience some details outside
the tables of the great bridge events. Would you describe how you
and your team prepare themselfs for an imaginating Bermuda Bowl match,
for example possible QF vs Norway..or smth like this..
