Can we play 2 over 1 in BBO/ACBL speedball games? They always send a message prior to game saying must play SAYC.

the message is:
"post a convention card or play basic SAYC"

which means you must post a convention card or you can be forced to play SAYC
This is an ACBL rule which is usually ignored. On BBO it is almost totally ignored.

You can play whatever you want in speedballs.

if you don't post a CC, it will automatically select the SAYC CC for you, which is what the message says. But if you're playing something else and don't have a CC, you should announce it to the opponents at the beginning of the round and be very diligent about alerting.
