Unforgivable of course, but it's not an easy auction for NS in any event - the 3 bid puts a real spanner in the works.
6 is there and also 3x would be a better score than 4+1.

Thomas's 3S is forcing since north chose to open bidding in first seat with one of a suit. The first question Gib's inner workings should be programmed to know is whether or not pass is an option. Since pass in not an option, it must choose something else...

Four clubs would be my choice after 3S. South’s next call after 4C would be the toughest. Bidding spades again is very tempting, but knowing Gib I’d probably go for 5c for fear of being left in a 5-2 or 5-1 fit after repeating spades (voice of experience). The club king should take away any worries about playing it there.

Yes, the 3D bid was a "real spanner'.

Well done by GIB to find an opening 1 bid with a semi-solid 7 card suit.

This one deserves another thread, but is such a good fit for this one I can't resist. How's this for "invitational"?

After all, the definition does say "Invite 6+diamonds, 9-11 hcp"

Easy to smile after this one, but it wouldn't have been if I'd I passed with a lesser, but good enough to open, hand. This beastly 9-11 hcp will make game opposite most minimum openers.
