Club night mp pairs.

There is no alert of the double - implying that it is take-out. The lady on your left hesitates before her final pass. Before your lead, you inquire about the meaning of the double and she hesitates again, before telling you that she thinks that it shows a four-card heart suit.

You are familiar with the lady on your left and judge her to be competent, but are not familiar with the gentleman partnering her.

Your lead?

If partner had a 6 card suit and about 10 points he/she would have bid it at the 2 level here. Small may hit partner's second suit - even a 3 card one - and create tricks for your side while you still have an entry.

Many BBO posters tell us that they don't promise 4+ s, when they double s, negatively.
Here declarer is more likely to hold s. Nevertheless, I rank ...
1. J At the table, I would have considered no other lead.
2. 3 Might work. FelicityR makes a good case.
3. 2 Possible because, with 4+ s, South might rebid them.
4. 2 But North's 2N might be based on a fit,

I kind of like the diamond lead - as FelicityR says, we do have a guaranteed entry, and the club potentially too.

If a spade is right and we don't lead it though, our partner might roast us. Still, partner isn't promising any particularly worthwhile suit here.

This all really depends upon how disciplined your partner's overcalls are. The J is usually good enough to help set up partner's suit. Hopefully, the diamonds will provide an entry. It's possible that partner will have the ideal holding to set up your diamonds, but I rarely score well by playing partner for perfect hands.

With kind regards
