Pairs. You are playing a four-card major, weak NT system and partner's 1 opening is natural and now promises 5+ clubs or possibly a 4414 shape.

Options include:
- 3 non-forcing but strongly invitational.
- 4 100% forcing - invites cue-bids.
- 1 4th suit forcing (one-round force only at the one-level).

What is your plan? And how willing are you to go past 3NT?

Hi,

1S.

I will force to game, i.e. 3C is out, but before I investigate slam
I hopefully learn, that partner has a bit more than his usual rubbish.

If he bids 1NT, I will bid 3C, and he can decide, if he is interested in
going beyond 3NT.
If he bids 2C, I can show the spade singleton via a 3S splinter.

With kind regards
Marlowe

Yes, I would too. Not sure why she didn't, since that is our system.

Agree that over 1, 2 (FJ) would have been better than 1.
Now I rank
1. 4 = F/G. Simple.
2. 1 = FSF. Asking for interference, especially at this vulnerability. Although opponents' silence, so far, is consistent with partner being 4414.
3. 3 = NAT. But N/F, so risky with this mountain.

I'd bid 1s to find out about partner's hand. With spade values, I'd be looking for 3n. What I'm really hoping for, is partner can't bid nt, now a club game or slam is in the works. My personal style is to reserve SJS for hands that are immediately interested in slam, so they usually are in the 15+ range. I don't like to do it with just game forcing hands, because too much room is chewed up to make the right call.

It is pairs, so with this « moderately strong » hand, we can’t just go beyond 3NT and risk a bottom. Furthermore, it seems 4C is just forcing to slam (when all suits are controlled). And despite our good hand, we are a bit light for this action (we could do it w/ the HK).
On the contrary, we definitely want to play game. 3C is then a grossly insufficient bid that we would make with a K less.
So 1S is the only call we can make.

Based on the agreements, I think 1 FSF should be bid. You need more info from partner.

I had a very similar hand just a few days ago and opted for the 4SF route. It would have worked a treat, if partner hadn't passed my 3D followup and blown 15 IMPs.
