IMPs (Teams of 8)

You have (mis-)bid to a very optimistic game. East leads the 6 (4th highest, 2nd highest from a poor suit).

What do you play at trick 1?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This reminds me of a board I posted earlier which I misplayed.
IMO, you should hope that East has underled KQ because
1. Then the J becomes a trick and you are desperately short of tricks.
2. Even if going up A would have blocked the suit, opponents are still likely to come to enough tricks in other suits to defeat the contract.

Let’s try to make 2D+2H+4S+1C (or 2S+3C but we have to decide at trick 1).

Yes, HTx6 is twice more likely than HHx6, but I’d also run it to the J.

Eeven if they block it is likely we’ll give the lead at some stage to the one who can cash D tricks, as we have so few top tricks.

PS: played the other side on the D6 from W, not putting J seems’better🤣

Thanks all. On this occasion I needed (and failed) to go up with ace:

I ducked - as suggested by Nige1, a reasonable hope is that East has led from KQXX(XX).

On this occasion it is the spades suit that yields the tricks.

The two other pairs who played 3NT managed to play it from the South side and made the contract after a lead of the K (which also helps to guide them to go after spades as a source of tricks!

Did I mention that South should bid NT on his balanced hand?
