It isn't offered as a possibility. Are there some code that I could enter and make a poll that isn't at the beginning of a thread?

I don't think so. Start a new thread with a poll, and include a link to the original thread to provide context.

I don't think it's even possible to insert a poll into the original post of an existing thread.
Looks like you have to already decide and create the poll when you open the thread, period.

- Allow poll creator to make "poll only"
Do you wish to allow posters who create polls to be able to disallow replies to the poll?
No

- Allow "Public Polls"
Public polls show who voted for which option and can be enabled when creating a poll if allowed.
Yes

- Allow Vote Deletion

So there is a useful parameter.
Please could you increase to 48?
That way one could decide a poll on the basis of the initial responses - when posting a bidding or play problem it is not easy to anticipate which question will turn out to be central to the thread or which "logical alternatives" will be deemed to be of note.

IIRC, a late start poll would still show at the top.

It looks to me as if that parameter defines how late is too late to start a poll, currently 24 hours.
It often takes a bit more than that to discover what the poll should be.
