sabine just made a suggestion in vugraph that seems pretty good to me... during certain events, somewhere on the screen have a link to a pair's convention card (hell, maybe even photos)

This can be done already in a number of ways:

1. In the c:/bridge base online/players/ directory, create text files called playername.txt for each participant in the event. Within these text files put a hyperlink to the convention card (for which any serious event will have all of these available online) and a photo if available. When the vugraph operator enters the player names, provided the name is exactly the same as the text file, the details will be automatically picked up. Of course, this would involve quite a lot of advance work for the vugraph operator but would be quite feasible for events with a small number of teams or a head-to-head KO match. The format is:

Full Name||Country|Profile

2. On a match-by-match basis, if the operator has time he/she could quickly copy and paste the hyperlink into the player profile box.

3. Commentators can (and usually do) regularly advise the audience of the official website for the event which ought to include player convention cards.

I note, however, that under options 1 & 2 above, when watching a vugraph presentation the player profiles are not "copy&pastable" and a webpage typed in the profile is not "clickable" so this would require some software changes.

A further software improvement for BBO vugraph would be to have a configurable button (maybe saying "Tournament Website") where the vugraph operator can insert a link to the offical website.

In most cases the link to the official web site is incorporated in to the event name. It will also save me from hundreds of time consuming private chat messages regarding where, when, why and why not.

I think this is the most commonsense approach: webpages with all the required info seem the most practical way to go.

While Sabine raises a useful point, I fear that the surrounding issues are rather complex. In this case, there are two separate and distinct issues that need to be achieved to accomplish Sabine's end:

1. BBO needs to add some functionality to conveniently permit the Vugraph audience to display the pairs convention card. This is all fine and dandy.

2. Event organizers need to require that participants submit detailed convention cards in advance of the actual event. It should be noted that the standard convention cards used in Zones like North America probably don;t provide enough information for the audience to garner much useful information. The WBF cards do a MUCH better job, however, I doubt that we'll see these used during ACBL events...

Even so, this type of flat text system really isn't appropirate for a hypertext based world...

In an ideal world, I hope that we will eventually migrate to a system in which major bridge competitions are actually held in an electronic playing environment. Ideally, the Vugraph audience will simple be able to piggyback off the standard alerts and announcments used at the table...

agree with richard.. i can foresee a time when, while watching vugraph, we click links by a pair's name and see their photos *and* at least a synopsis of the system they play

yeah, it's adequate the way it is, being able to go to a page and scroll to whomever you're looking for... this is just a wish list type thing

That is standard procedure during on site vugraph presentations at major international championships like the Europeans, World Championships, Bermuda Bowl and Olympics.

It won't be long until it is on the internet too. Players usually don't mind, and they actually don't have a say in this context, as long as it's stated in the conditions of contest that they must appear on vugraph whenever asked to.
