You are West. N opens 1❤️ (5 card), Partner doubles, S bids 4❤️.

With this 8 loser hand, do you bid 5♣️ or Pass, Double?

Not rocket science; just curious.

I can't imagine anything but Pass here.

Pass is risky, do you expect partner to reopen with say xxxx, x, AKQx, Axxx where 5 is good and you haven't beaten 4 yet, but bidding is riskier still.

You have to pass I think and hope partner has enough to reopen.

Well, I expected him to double on the last round! But failing that, he is a lot closer to a bid than I am!

you rate to have zero defense but can reasonably expect your side to take at least 9 tricks in clubs. Those two things point to 5c and the bidding is not over yet. Bidding 5c now at least gives the idea of offensive values whereas bidding 5c over 4hx (if that happens) can easily be from hunger and would we really be willing to leave 4hx in?

Red vs white you need to take 10 tricks in 5c to make it worth it, and that's assuming they can make 4H. Pass and hope partner leads a S.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree with those who opted for Pass. I feel it’s correct at both IMPs and MPs.

For the record, 5♣️ was cold, 4❤️ was minus one. Par was 5❤️X - 1.
