You open 1 and LHO interferes 3, natural and weak.
What are your agreements about a 4 response by partner?
MP and neither side vulnerable, if it matters.

Isn't 4 always Gerber and 4NT alway Blackwood? :)

It's definitely natural and, at this level, ought to show opening+ values.

It doesn't necessarily deny 4 , but with mediocre , opening values, and 4 , a negative double of 3 might be made instead.

By UPH, yes. (But only F1, responder could pass 4D if it looked like the best thing to do.)

Thanks to all. I asked because I usually play this as Kickback for (4NT is too high and I prefer 4 natural), so when it came up undiscussed with a casual partner I was unsure how to take it. I expected it to be at least constructive and probably F1, so having decent clubs I raised to game - unfortunately partner's bid was purely competitive and the contract went down one trick.

New suit after a weak over call is always natural and forcing I suppose.

I think it is best to clearly define when bids are not natural, then if something comes up that is weird the fallback is that un-discussed it must be natural.

Quite right, and we did agree implicitly that this would fallback to natural... but the devil is in the details, in this case how constructive and whether or not forcing.

I think there you have to fall back on basic bridge intelligence - a new suit at the 4-level? Or to put it another way: you can always bid weaker hands another way - pass, negative double, raise - but how do you bid a strong or at least a 1-round forcing strong hand if you can't bid it naturally? Which hand type is more important to be able to bid?

Natural and forcing to game. Opener bids 4D (6), 4H (strong support for clubs - does NOT promised first round control), 4S (four good spades as sometimes a 4-3 fit might be best, 5C - what you do with all your weak NT types with bad diamonds and good clubs, 4N (I would play this TO PLAY) - a misfitting hand with double heart stop and probable length - if you want to slam try clubs start with 4H)

If it's any passed hand then nonforcing (as when he did not want to preempt). If a non passed hand then we play it as F1.( not interested in spades obviously and with a tolerance for diamonds).

For us 4C is natural, forcing to game, but could be a cue for diamonds.
If it is coming from a passed hand (a hand, that had the chance to bid), it is fit showing,
and not gameforcing.
With kind regards
