Here's a hand from the Indonesian Teams last night. This didn't happen, since both tables stopped in 3, but lets says North takes the push.

Lets say that you defend 4 after the auction 1 on left, 1N on right, 3 on left, 4 on right.

Pard leads the 5, and declarer plays small. Since you want to know if pard led from a stiff, or QT5, you play small and declarer wins the 10.

Declarer plays the 3 from hand, 2, J......?

Over to you.

I'm going to give you a hint here. There are three hand types that pard can hold that allow you to beat the hand. What are they and how does it affect your defense?

Declarer rates to have 6331. I would duck the spade ace. Declarer needs to return to hand by playing either H or C. We should be able to tell from it which ace pd has.

pattern 1: partner has A

pattern 2: partner has A and 3

pattern 3: Didn't find yet.

At match points it would be easy, get A, adn try oto crossruff for 2 off, still thre is something to say about trying second off at IMPs as well, if the 2 patterns are close enough, I think I would try for first one then. Althou I bet it is not right.
