Lets say that you defend 4♠ after the auction 1♠ on left, 1N on right, 3♠ on left, 4♠ on right.
Pard leads the ♦5, and declarer plays small. Since you want to know if pard led from a stiff, or QT5, you play small and declarer wins the 10.
