Hi all:
with my current partners we play that, over
1D/1H/1S openings (Precision, nebulous diamond), if opps overcall at the 1 level or double, responder's bids from 1NT though 1 step below opener's suit are transfers, weak or strong.

E.g

1D-(1M/Dbl):?
1 of suit (if available) = nat., 4+ cards, forcing
1NT = xfer to clubs, weak/strong
2C = xfer to D, inv+
2D = weak

1H-(1S/Dbl):?
1NT = xfer to clubs, weak/strong
2C = xfer to D, weak/strong
2D = xfer raise, 8+
2H = weak raise

1S opening development is similar.
-----------------------------------------------

THE QUESTION: BREAKING THE XFER ?
We have agreed that breaking the transfer means some "superaccept" by opener.
However, it is not clear then what should opener do if he is void in responder's suit.

If breaking the xfer means a superaccept with extras (in a Precision context, max 15; extras are usually defined in distributional term), then the only way to escape from a misfit would be a suit rebid by opener?
However, responder might be in misfit as well.

So do you simply suggest to accept the xfer if holding a total misfit and a minimum opener ?

breaking the transfer should not show a super accept. It should show a misfit and something good of your own to show. I would not play these methods if i had to accept a transfer to clubs with KJxxx AKxxx xxx ---. To show a super accept you can just make a plain vanilla jump raise. Not spectacular I know, but it gets the job done.

I play a similar scheme, under which breaking the transfer at the lowest level shows misfit (0-1 cards) and a min hand. Breaking the transfer via a jump or reverse or 2NT shows extras.

The reason transfer breaks after 1NT show a fit is opener is balanced, thus he always has 2+ cards on the suit. If he could have 0-1 cards, then breaks must be used to show misfits.

Hi Mauro,

I have a question :

Playing these transfer responses, if you have the natural 1NT bid (6-10), what do you do if 1NT is transfer to ?

:)

If you play Precision, opener has max 15 hcp, and with 6-10 you seldom risk losing game.

With a 1NT response you simpli PASS and pard will reopen with most unbalanced hands or max balanced.
With 9-10 hcp you might sometimes venture a slightly offshape negative double.

True, in a few hands, the 1NT bid hlps, but on balance the advantages have offset the downside more often.

Mauro - start your transfers with redouble. There's no reason not to. You ALWAYS want the strong hand on lead.

We play, in a nutshell:

Acceptance (1 level) - 3 trump
"Raise" - to 2 level - 4 trump
anything else - less than 3 trump

After we force ourselves to the 2 level, an acceptance can be made on a doubleton.

I read something in the BBF thread, but what do you do with a good balanced hand, say 10-11+ hcp

There are dozens of ways to play these transfer responses. One should use the scheme that best fits his particular system and style.

What Misho and I do is that Equality thing he started here on the BBF when he was an active poster.

Basically, like Phil, we use redbl to show the next higher suit, but is one exception, and 1NT is always natural. So here is the rules.

1h-Dbl-
  • Rdbl = spades
  • 1S=balanced not suited for 1NT or clubs
  • 2C=diamonds
  • 2D=good raise to 2H
  • 2H=preemptive raise

The exception is this auction, specifically. 1S-DBL-? Where now a redbl is either balanced unsuited for 1NT or club.

So far we have had good success with the major advantages being no need to jump to 2NT and get to high with balanced yuck, we can show the balanced hand that is either too strong for 1NT or that lacks a stopper with the 1 under 1NT bid, and we can show good versus weak support at the two level. We often get to 1NT from the "right side" when responder lacks a key stopper etc.
