This is egregious, even by GIB; at other tables GIB doubled. I set up my own personal system so that against any natural 1NT in 3rd seat, I have a Penalty X!

I have over the years done quite well by not making a penalty double of a strong NT with a bal 17. And on those occasions when I do I tend to come a cropper.

So it works on this hand. This is better than a flat 17 and has an obvious and safe lead. And I understand that it is supposed to be GIB system, so not sure why it didn't.

Possibly GIB rated it as borderline. Maybe X is better, but I would describe "egregious" as a bit of an overbid.
