is partners pass forcing?

suppose lho passe over your 4♠ and rho bids 5♥, would your pass be forcing?

IMO neither pass is forcing (anyway, a negative double doesn't create a game force). In either case I'd pass. e.g. after
1♣ (3♥) X (4♥)
4♠ (5♥) P ?? I rank calls as...
  • Pass = Not forcing. You've told your story.
  • Double = Dangerous but warns partner about your dull shape.
  • 5♠ = Gross overbid.

IMHO, you do not hold a 4♠ bid. Partner promises a good 11 HCP at minimum. If partner holds only the minimum, then you likely don't have game. I prefer a double (balance of power). When the opponents bid to 5♥ in your auction, partner's pass is forcing. Criteria: opponents are sacrificing at the 5-level when we own more than half the deck (we had an invitational or better auction). Your minimum flat shape argues for penalizing them at the 5-level. Your soft values are better for defense.

Yes I think so. When a passed hand raises a preempt to game we are in a force.

Nevertheless I wouldn't have bid 4♠.

this kind of hand led me to conclude that a weak nt was safer, overall, than an amorphous 1c. you could be in trouble in 3s, more in 4.
