Another one from yesterday's IMPs, green vs. red, you decide to open 1S (2NT would be a small distortion vs. system but we've both done it once or twice before) the following nice lot:

And it goes pass pass 2D, you X (2NT is probably too much especially since you didn't deem your hand worth a 2NT opening), it goes pass, 2H, pass, and now?

If you pass, your LHO offers you another try bidding 3D, but partner suprisingly bids 3H, passed to you. One more for the road?

Maybe I could have saved partner (he had the strong hand) some headaches by jumping to 3H on the X with

Anyway, opponents should have let us play 1S as I made 11 tricks on a soft defence. Would you balance red vs. green with what opponent had

After you do double, partner has a normal 2H bid, pass is good, passing 3H seems a little wet. I would bid 4H I think. You have a very good hand opposite 5 hearts, but you have to have a good understanding of the lower limit of a dbl. Its quite style dependent. With 5 hearts I would dbl most 7 counts, so after 3H you have a pretty good feeling that there is a target of 5-7 with 5 hearts which you could make a decent game.


I wouldnt dble first anyway, I think that you have a perfect 2N bid, 18-19 with a double diamond stop.

Why not respond 1NT with what is a perfectly good 5-count and spade tolerance?

After partner can bid a free 3H I would raise to 4H at imps - we have good support and ♦AQ has gone up in value a lot now.

i respond and having forgotten to respond i jump. opener is right to pass 2h. over 3h i still pass. doubling opposite a hand which is too weak to respond shows a very good hand.

that's not what it shows. hands with 18-19 balanced either pass or double depending on shape. they don't bid 2nt because there's no chance of making 3nt and there is a good chance of getting sawn off. this is not like 1h 2s p p 2nt where responder can have a decent hand.

2nt here should be x6x4, or, if you prefer to keep things natural, and have a penchant for aiming for tiny targets, something semi balanced invitational to 3nt, as in something like a 21/22 count in playing strength.
