I suspect this will be near unanimous. Most "experts" will treat pass as at least a tolerance for defending 1D xx'd, unless I am sadly mistaken. If you cant stand to do so, then you must pull, even if to your cheapest 3 card suit. You have to bid 1H here, you have 4 hearts, your partner said he accepted all other suits (supposedly). 1N is a lie regarding both your hand strength and your HCP.
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?
So many experts, not enough X cards.

Partner asked me to pick a suit, so I pick a suit. 1♥.

I really don't see the benefit of any other action.

For me it was clear, :o only pass when all 3 other suits are equivalent. That way pard can bid his best suit at the best level and know he has support. :D Only pass with a lot of trump and only bid NT if you are crazy. .....Two others felt that with no points, unless you have a 5 or 6 card suit, wait for them to come back in ;) ......this must be wrong when you can send the right message with 1H esp. since pard said he at least tolerated H... .

1♥ is is totally clear here. Pass says nothing about getting to play 1♦ xx'd.

20 to zip as I vote 1H. That's unanimity for the call, although maybe not quite unanimty for the reason. I agree with what I think is the majority that pass says nothing about wanting to play 1DXX, it simply declines an opportunity to show a preference. Partner is allowed to double with four spades and three hearts. If he has done so, he will call 1S if you pass. You cannot stand that. You bid 1H with the reasonable expectation you will be in at least a 4-3 fit and the hope you will not be playing it there. In this auction you do what you can to help, and that means bidding 1H. Partner is supposed to thank you for your help, not bid 2H expecting five.

1H simply shows that you have 4+ hearts and that it probably is the best place to play. Pass says absolutely nothing about wanting to play 1Dxx and simply tells the double that you have no preference as to whether you play 1H or 1S or possibly 2C.

Totally WTP. Swap the hearts and clubs and pass looks a lot better--2♣ cuts out any chance of getting out a the 1 level and partners have been known to double with a doubleton club.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

Agree with 1♥, and agree that pass does not imply willingness to defend 1♦XX. Given the fact that I hold 4 hearts, I can not risk passing and have partner save by bidding 1♠. However, reverse my major suit holdings and I might pass the XX (not saying that I would pass). If P rescues to 1♥, i can correct to 1♠. I can't do that with 2-4 in majors.

Several people have added a WTP to their comments. The "problem" so to speak, to some people I know is the impact that the bidding might have on partner should partner be on lead against some contract by the opps.

What would you bid, given the same auction, holding KJT, Txxx, xxxx, xx? What to bid holding this type of hand is a common point of disagreement among many players and is a matter for partnership agreement.

Oops, I accidentally chose Pass isntead of 1♥!

I meant to bid 1♥, so it is still sort of unanimous.

1H is clear. Maybe the idea that pass shows a willingness to play in 1Dxx, because there are similar auctions where pass does show a willingness to play XX.

1H 2C p p
X XX p* p
?
or
1H p p X
XX p* p ?
both p* are penalty passes. Otherwise a XX would save the bidder.
