On 6/29 in the Common Game I was dealer non-vulnerable and held KQT98 Q9532 K 74 (Board 12). We play an aggressive style of Precision featuring light openings in the majors. Our general standard for majors is 8+ hcps and no more than 7 LTC. We also play a 1NT response as Non-Forcing 8-11 hcps. and denying a fit. I chose to open, but my partner thought I should have downgraded for the single King of diamonds and passed. Am I the only one on the planet that would open this had?

In my opinion pass is fine, because your hand is not that strong + you have both majors, which means that you can always enter the auction again. Obviously opps can jump somewhere, but passing is okei.

If your major suit openings are 8+, then this is a no-brainer 1S opener. When you are this far beyond the agreed minimum, leave the evaluations until later in the hand.

Exactly playing standard if you passed a 14 pt hand because it had a singleton K people would laugh at you. If 8 is your min then your opening this type of hand for good or bad.

All my instincts tell me to pass. Until your partner bids the suit, the bare K is worthless trick wise but may be a ruffing value if a major suit fit can be found. On hands like this, the wise course of action is to bide your time and await developments...you can always come into the bidding again later if the signs are propitious(!)

Since you hold both majors your side won't be outbid all else equal. What's the rush? Opening doesn't seem to offer any additional benefits. Make the K the K and opening is auto.

Agreement between partners is to be maintained always.Otherwise arbitrariness will creep in.

Too be honest, I'd open this with some of my 2/1 partners (rule of 20, easy rebid for constructive auctions, great suit quality for my opening bid, etc.). It is therefore an obvious no-brainer in a limited opener with an agreed lower range. If the diamond K was a 2 instead then I'd want to open it in precision (but not 2/1), but the stupid 8 hcp minimum requirement would kick in. But if it were the stiff J of diamonds, I do open it in precision (but not 2/1).

I would NOT open this hand and would come in later. Partner will be disappointed if I open this hand even playing LOBs.

IMO 1 = 10. Pass = 8.

Looks like an ok but not great opening for 1, given you play light openers and precision. Sure it'd be better to have aces or less HCPs in your stiff, but 5/5 majors is a good shape so I'd open it.

I would not open playing regular Precision but 8+ is a different animal. Sure you downgrade the singleton king but it is certainly worth one hcp. I assume your partner would open KQT98 QJ932 2 74, for example.

Why play a system if you aren't going to make the system bid? If we aren't going to play the system, I'll open an all purpose 1 bid and see if partner can figure out what I have.
