MP, Robodupe, Ver 33

I thought it mildly odd that responder would use Stayman and then give up on the possibility of a Spade fit. Punting 6N may be right, but why ask about Hearts on the way? Just gives info to the opponents.

A few reached 7S, here was one example:

Not saying that 7S is a bad contract at single dummy. I don't have a strong opinion on that. Too complicated for my poor brain to evaluate, but my instinct says that it is close. But I think that it could have been worse, and the leap to 7S seems precipitous, to me. Obviously a comfortable make as the cards lie.

On a similar theme some poor soul failed to check the meanings of the bids before committing:

Leaving aside South's error, that still leave's North's leap to 7 worthy of thought.

I suspect on the first, the robot didn't think grand would be on opposite 4 hearts and so settled for the higher scoring slam. 7S is a great contract, needing no more than hearts being no worse than 5-2.

edit: Come to think of it, what is the bid for a slam force with 4 spades? 3S sets hearts as trumps. 5NT? 6S?

You are right -- I had not put a lot of thought into the merits of 7S, having noted that any line makes.

Perhaps 6N asks me to convert to 7S with a Spade fit.
