My link

IMPS, ACBL robot individual

Of the 19 participants, 10 evaluated this hand as being worth a 2NT opening (20-21 HCP), while 9 opened 1 and rebid 2NT (presumably 18-19 HCP). In the latter instances, North drove to slam in without any encouragement from South, while opposite the stronger 2NT opening North invited with 4NT. The Souths who opened 1 received a 12-IMP gift, which is very difficult to overcome unless the hands are very volatile. This is a recurring problem which I think deserves BBO's attention.

As far as I can tell Gib has no way to make a slam try with long diamonds over 2N (a weakness). Can show 5+ using Stayman by later bidding 4 but Stayman supposedly promised a 4 card major.

Perhaps after 1-1 opener can upgrade their hand based on K and cooperate which 2N opener can't. or did auction go 1-1-2N-6?

With perhaps 1 exception, South didn't cooperate. The auction usually went:

1-1
2NT-3
3NT-4NT(RKCB)
5-6

I wonder how gib expects south to bid a 4-4-1-4 19 count. Maybe bid 3M over 3D.

Perhaps at the majority tables the 3N bid implies D support by reason of failure to bid 3M over 3D.

The explanation of the 3N bid denies 5M but not 4M, but the 2NT rebid denies singleton or void. Oddly, the 3N rebid explanation says 19HCP, after the 2N rebid shows 18-19HCP. Is South really supposed to bid differently with 18 than with 19?

OP's initial objection is clearly right: North shouldn't bid more opposite balanced 18-19 than he does opposite balanced 20-21.
