NAP C first qualifying, so very uneven matchpoint field. Do you act?

If I have a partner that respects the vulnerability they wont have less than KQJxxx or AQJxxx for the 2s bid I will bid 3s trying to make life just a little bit tougher for the opps. If they get to 3n I pass and hope to set them. If I have a partner that likes to play a less than strict version of 2s forgetaboutit and hope the opps get themselves in trouble:)

I bid 3D as a FNJ. I want a diamond lead against their heart contract.

Although I don't like to pass much, bidding on this hand feels too risky for me.

Given our shape and honour distribution, it's likely that partner is short in diamonds. I would hate to score -200 (or even -500) opposite [AQJxxx Txx x Qxx] when 3H is going down. Even if partner does have length in diamonds, we will most likely only succeed in pushing the opponents into a skinny making game.

Finally, you will usually be on lead against the final contract so the lead directing aspect of 3D is negligible.

I'm pretty sure you'll get to lead one after some transfer auction?

I might well get to. I might not get to. Lefty might jump to 4H, they might not play transfers, some other weird thing relating to the alignment of the planets. In any case, I'm happy bidding to 3S on this hand and I don't want the ox leading from KJxxxx.

Who plays transfers after our 3d overcall? I suppose 4d ought to show hearts but even if they have that agreement Lho might well bid a natural 3h.

Lol ok the point was that we can also pass and lead diamonds ourselves. Ok. Personally I don't play transfers in response to a 2nt overcall but maybe that's unusual in op's area?
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Even opposite KQJxxx you can still go for 500 if partner has a mirror distribution; in practice I think the ST makes it more likely that overcaller has {A/K}Jx as a stop. As it turned out, partner had KQxxxx and out so passing was the correct double-dummy decision (although it is not clear whether they could actually have nailed us).

... but mr1303 guessed what happened; the auction continued (3H) P (4H), a spade was led and a diamond trick went away on the solid clubs. -480 was a bottom :-(

I'm with the 3 FNJ but more to let partner decide what to do over 4.

I can't tell from my seat but with the extra info from 3 partner hopefully will know if we should be saving or not.
