If they've bothered to program West to double 5♦, why isn't East programmed to lead the suit? That lead just happens to beat the slam.

This is actually pretty logical, as GIB issues go. W thinks E has a !D holding of KQxxx or better. Looking at qxxxxx itself it sees that often one of oponents will either hold the A!D or a void a large percentage of the time.

I must be misreading the cryptic terminology of the explanations. If my partner promises "KQ or better" and I hold the Q then partner cannot have "KQ" so must have "or better". "Kx" is actually worse, so the only way that he could have "or better" is if that includes the Ace.
Thus I read it that East's holding Ace is 100%.
I agree that from West's viewpoint an opposing void is quite likely, but that does not make a D lead worse than any other, and as here a void is not certain.

Is a void really likely in robot logic? North didn't show a void in response to Blackwood, so it shouldn't have one. Does robot logic allow for South using Blackwood with a void?

I think something like KJTxx might qualify.

GIB's description of the double has no relationship to any kind of bridge I'm familiar with. Rebiddable suit??? Why isn't a simple lead directing description being used?
In any case, 4NT bidder should not have a void and 5♦ bidder is not likely to have a void (no initial splinter, no void showing response to RKB). So even if double shows a rebiddable suit, a 1-1 split should be expected. In the absence of a better lead, I can't see leading anything but a diamond.
