Matchpoints, ACBL robot individual

The North hand was something of a disappointment when revealed. If it had been anything close to what the notes documented (given confirmation via grand slam force that North held KQ), the grand should have been near lay-down. And, yes, I could have settled for the small slam and earned a 90% score in this instance, but if North really did have a very good hand, 6 would likely have been a well-below-average score.

North is forced into its substandard 3 by East's impertinent crowding of the auction. Opponents tend to do that. Which is one of many reasons I think bidding s before s with a hand as weak as North's is a losing proposition. Bidding 1 gets you to 3NT on this hand, which was worth 80% of the matchpoints. But if, as I expect, theory continues to prevail over pragmatism, the notes should be revised to reflect that North can have a 9-count for its 3 bid when the bidding gets jammed like this.

Not that it's relevant on this auction, but I've seen this happen a lot... if 3 shows 4+ diamonds, doesn't it also show 5+ clubs, since GIB's system is to open 1 with 4/4 minors?

Thanks for reporting.

Both N and S calls were corrected in next v33.

When opener gives fit to partner's diamonds will show 5+ 4+ as here.

New 3 would have the meaning -> -- 5+ ; 4+ ; 15-18 total points

On the other side, 3 ( or the unbid major ) would show -> 5+ ; 4+ ; 10+ total points
