I'd like to suggest that the balancing double should show a hand that wasn't strong enough to make the direct double. The explanation indicates otherwise.

I wonder why North chose to bid diamonds over the direct double but hearts over the balancing double.

PS: East had 8HCP and a small stiff club. (5431)
