So I had my first evening at a london club last night at the ACOL club playing with a (very good and nice) random. We did pretty well for a scratch partnership but this one was interesting.

The opponents are a pair of LOL's so 3D could be forcing could be non forcing could be just about anything.

The bidding starts 3C by north - X/pass by East - 3D by south

Scoring is MP

my questions:

Do you double as East?

If yes - what do you do over 3D as west
If no - what do you do over 3D as west

we ended up in 4H (bidding given in diagram) which through a bit of luck and good play by my partner made but obviously it was a big stretch.

Thanks,

Eagles

It's close, but I consider the east just a bit too weak for a takeout double in the direct seat. Add any sort of extra value and I am in.
As west, over 3 I am passing if partner passed-- the distribution may be nice but vs a passed partner game is far away.
As it went, I agree with west's bidding, though I'm not sure the X of 3 should be reflective, 4 seems a better choice.

4 needs a bit more than good play and good luck -- you're missing 4 tricks off the top.

luckily not 4 losers off the top because S has no clubs and both major aces :D

edit: whats the difference between 4C and 4D after 3C x 3D

Dbl by W is probably penalties so not good. Bid 4.

Would 4 be something different? I wouldn't know how p would take 4, it might even be natural.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Frankly, I think there's no difference. No doubt it's theoretically possible to make something up that might be useful, the next time it comes up in 15 years or so, but I'm not bothering.
4 is probably clearer in just asking for the best major, helene could well be right that 4 might just as well be natural, to disarm the psych by responder.

I think I would stretch to bid 4M as well with West's hand.

I consider the original takeout double an acceptable minimum. However, I don't think west is strong enough to double here, in spite of their distribution. The QJ of clubs is almost certainly wasted, so 3 is their bid, in my opinion.
