MP, best hand South, Instant, Pro GIB 30.

I give West a bit of latitude for South's psych, having a full value Spade raise (taking advantage of the best hand South information).

But even if South had a genuine 4S raise, do you think that 5C is reasonable?

It's certainly a risk, but it could pay off... swap ♠7 and ♥7 from East for ♣K and ♥K from South, making South's bid more accurate, and you should pull off 5♣, maybe even 6♣. Yes, in that case maybe you also could set 4♠x 3 for 500, but who knows...

When you psych, sometimes you fool partner, sometimes you fool the opponents. GIB has no concept of psyching, except if it has conflicting information, the logic frequently blows a gasket. In this case, you got the opponents. If you had the likely 5 spades and limited points, east is going to have a void in spades and probably 6 or 7+ points.

Yes I had second thoughts after posting this. Not one of GIB's flakey moments. At white v red almost auto, esp MP.

It got me to thinking that the 4S psych may be quite effective as a mixed strategy in a human game. You are gambling on slam your way, but if it induces an overcall more often than you have slam on ...

Problem in my experience is partner bidding again over the overcall in front of my double.
