I think North has an easy 3 bid - was it expecting E to bid again or something?
2NTx= was the most common result, with E holding 62 A AT2 AQ98752 you get to cash your five running spades and declarer gets two aces and six running diamonds.

Certainly an inappropriate pass, but definitely not strange for GIB who makes all kinds of suicidal passes of takeout doubles without hope of beating the contract. This doesn't make past a 5 out of 10 in terms of worst conversions of a takeout double.

North and East have 5 of each major between them... GIB's description of a 2 opening includes a maximum of 3 in each major... so, South is at least 5-5 in the majors... Shoulda bid 3 instead of dbl B-)

Yeah, South's hand was something like AKQJx KQJTx x xx. Didn't want to give up on penalty in case distributions are wild all over the table.
