Curious if awm considers this North worth a semipositive. Thinking yes. If so, my bidding would go...

1C-1H 16+, 5-10 w/ 4+ spades
1S-1N asking, 2+ clubs
2C-2D GF, bal
2H-3S asking, 4342 and 2-3 QPs
4D-4H terminator, forced
P

If not, then...

1C-1D 16+, 0-4 or 9+
1N-2D 5+H and not 4S, 0-4 and 2-3 hearts
2H-3H to play, invite
4H

Meckwell-Lite:

1 - 1 (16+; 0-7)
1 - 2 (Natural F1; 5-7 with 3 card support)
4

Note that responder can bid 2 over a 2 rebid to show 4 - 3.

Edit: Corrected auction as per chasetb's feedback. The correct auction would go:

1 - 1 (16+; 0-7)
1 - 1 (Natural F1; natural F1)
1N - 2 (Natural; 3 , max)
4

Using my pet two-way pass:

pass 1
1 2
4

pass = 0-8 or 15+
1 = 0-8 or 15+
1 = natural, 5 cards and 15-20
2 = natural weakish raise 5-7 total points

Note that natural works good here as well:

1 2
4

:)

Same here (obviously, our system is based on Meckwell) :)

Silent Club:

1-1 strong; most non-GF
1-1N min 2 suiter (art); ask for long suit
2-3 5 hearts; 5-7 invite raise
4

I suppose North could bid 2N instead of 3 given his flat shape and good spots (leading to 3N), but 4 seems normal.

1 (16+) - 1 (spades)
1 (rel) - 1nt (bal/three-suited/diams)
2 (GF relay) - 2 (balanced/three-suited)
2 (relay) - 3 (4342)
4 (to s/o) - 4
Pass

No reason to look for slam over 3, since 4342 hand is limited to 5-8 hcp.

I'm almost ashamed to say it, but in my Molybdenum system north opens 1.

1 - 2
3 - 4

1 = 0-10, 4+ diamonds
2 = Very nearly forcing, nat

Pass 2000

North "opens" with a forcing pass:

pass-1; [0--7 or 17+; 0--7 or 17+]
1-2; [0--7; 17--19 unbal with 5+ hearts and 0--3 spades]
3-4;

Dubbelklubba (Swedish Club)

1-1; [11--13 bal or 17+; 0--7 or 8--11 bal with no 4 card major nor 5 card minor]
1-1; [3--4 hearts if weak, 4+ hearts if 17--19; 4+ spades, 0--7]
2-3; [5+ hearts; natural]
4

Modified SCAMP

1-1 . . . 16+; 0-7
1-2 . . . good 19+, any; 5-7 BAL, at least one 4M
2N-3 . . . relay; 4S+4m
3-3 . . . relay; 4D
3-4 . . . relay; 4-3-4-2
4

Opener could bid 3 (=0-1S) over 2 or even just 4 if he didn't want to relay.

If E-W pass, Unassuming Club (and variations thereon) probably bid a boring 1C-1D, 2H-3H, 4H. Some old-fashioned Polish Clubbers might too.

Is ANY E-W going to pass, rather than having it start 1C-(1S)-P-(2S)?

Would you really not want to bid 1 on the second round? Give partner a 4 and 5-6 hand (not the most common, but that is my kind of luck), and we should be stopping at the two level.

With my example, our 2 bid shoots down that possibility, especially if the auction will go 1 - 1 ; 1 - 2 ; 2 - 2 a majority of the time.

EDIT - My auction would go 1 - 1 ; 1 - 1; 1NT - 2 (maximum with 4-3); 4

1H-2H (11-14 or 18-22 unb, 3-7 pts)
2NT-3NT (18-22, max [4333]
4H

or

1C-1H (15+, 4S w or GF)
1NT-pass (15-20 many shapes)

I tend to downgrade my stiff K more than most players so I might see the hand as 15-17.

I hate singleton kings more than anything else. Still, seems clear to open this hand 1 and treat it as 18-20. It seems to me that all roads are going to lead to 4 on this hand regardless of system (computers excepted anyway).

P - 1 = 15-17 nat/bal or 18+ any
... - 1 = most non-GF hands
1 = 18-20 any or 23+ bal
... - 1 = most hands
2 = 5+ hearts, 18-20
... - 4

Good catch -- will fix the auction.
