The contract is 4 by NS.

Would you like to declare or defend? Please state if it depends on the direction.

I would like to defend, and no, it does not depend upon which direction. Maybe I could defend against Free?

Yes, I meant it as a double dummy problem.

Declare, either direction.

You can get two club ruffs, and finesse the SK, so you lose a club and two spades.

If not double dummy, no chance to make.

Defend using standard defense. I don't care who declares -- N,S,E, or W. 4S is going down ;>) as long as we lead (suit deleted).

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

double dummy? Declare. just be careful with spade spots. (And, if I screw it up [highly likely], partner can always says gtp just before leaving the table.) But, I think I just see a club and 2 spade losers.

OK, what trap am I missing on this hand?

You have only 3 losers, but sadly you have only 9 winners....

out.. you win

duck club (as good as any, but if you cash second diamond, see alsternative).

diamond out, you win (or if you had cashed a diamond, a heart back to you.

Ruff a club.

heart to your hand

Ruff a club

Spade = they play queen... see? you lose control you will lose 3 and a minor, there is no way to get teh timing right. You might try to give up a heart ruff... and use dummy heart as "trump substitute... let's continue normally...

You win spade king, and ruff you last club. Now you lead a spade. They win ace, and force you to ruff. You are now down to same number of turmps. If you play on hearts, they ruff.. if you play a spade, they win, and force you to ruff a diamond, setting up their spade 3.... there is no way to avoid losing control.

Of course, Ben is right. Took us a while to find this out, even though we knew the result (as this was printed out on the hands record of this computer dealt tournament hand).

I am not quite sure I agree with this, say on a club lead. Isn't it most natural to try to ruff two clubs, and take the double finesse in spades? Same if you get a diamond lead, and don't get a diamond back after ducking a club.
However, several good players went down by playing small to the K in spades (after having ruffed the first club), which I don't quite understand.

With AQJ in the South hand the contract can't make on a diamond lead. Give the jack to dummy in exchange for a small one, and the contract makes on any lead.

I think you can give it to defenders as well? Anyway, I am confident South always had the J.
