I can see the upgrade to 1♣; alternative auctions would be 1♠-2♠-game try-4♠, or maybe treating north as a 3 card limit raise to the same effect (1♠-1N-2♣-3♠-4♠).

If I'm getting a club lead, they are probably either 4-4 or 5-3, so I can easily hold up and establish diamonds. Also opponents tend to lead a major on this auction...
I expect to make 3nt at least as often as 4s makes (for example if spades are 4-1 then 4s will almost always fail). Of course given all four hands both games make.

The South hand looks suspiciously like a normal strong NT to me so I expect Adam's auction to be popular in practise. My system does not allow me to hide the 5 spades so it is going to be hard for North to convert to 3NT when it is right.
