It's not unreasonable to play this auction as natural. Say you had the same hand, but you had AKJxx of diamonds rather than clubs. Wouldn't you want to be able to bid diamonds naturally then? Arguably with your actual hand you can just bid some number of clubs. Or perhaps 2d is natural but 3d is this sort of construction.

Your preferred treatment of 2D is not unreasonable. But if you examine the actual meaning of 2D per GIB system you can see that GIB treats the bid as natural, showing Diamond length. In that context it is wrong to suggest that North’s pass is "unexpected". In fact pass is perfectly normal.

The true meaning of 2D is available to you before you commit to the bid.

By all means lobby to have the system changed if that is your purpose, but this is not clear from your OP. Bear in mind that East may have only 3 card Diamonds.

Personally I agree with your preferred meaning, but I do not feel strongly about it.
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

"Gentlemen, when the barrage lifts." 9th battalion, King's own Yorkshire light infantry,

"I will be with you, whatever". Blair to Bush, precursor to invasion of Iraq

If you bothered to read GIB's description of 2, it says biddable diamonds. It is not a cue bid according to GIB so pass is a perfectly legitimate response to 2.
