1S - 1NT - 2NT - 3D (transfer to hearts)

I opened 1S with a balanced 18 HCP. GIB responds 1NT and I raise to 2NT. GIB bids 3D explained as a transfer to hearts which I completed and GIB passed out with a 6 HCP hand with 5 hearts. Cool. I like transfers. So is 3C a transfer to diamonds? And is 3H a transfer back to spades? If so then what is the difference between the transfer to spades and the direct spade bid?
Its an interesting treatment that I haven't seen in this exact spot.
