To be frank, if North had just bid 5D over 2D I would not have turned a hair.

Also explanation of 2♦ was not appropriate.
Instead of - 4+ ♣; 4+ ♦; 21- HCP; 3-card ♣; 15-22 total points
Now it will be - 5+ ♣; 4+ ♦; 21- HCP; 18-22 total points
For the particular hand, GIB would hesitate whether to bid not 2♥ or between preemptive raise to 4♦ or to force to game with 2♠ showing - -- 4+ ♦; 7+ total points; forcing to 3N
