2N 3C (relay to 3D)
3H 3N

lead 2 tricks = 8

Whatever it is a uncontested or contested auction, both were easier to bid 3 as a final contract if Wolff signoff convention was applied I think.

3 at our table was New Minor Forcing. There just are not 9 tricks available.

I suspect that JEC and Versace would have arrived in 3NT if it were not for the opposition bidding.

The 3 bid was alerted as a relay to diamonds, was this perhaps intended as the start of a signoff and not NMF?

I don't understand the alert as a "relay to 3D." We do not play that. It should be NMF.Note the 3 response.
