Bidding is short. South opens 1S, North rebids 2S after a forcing 1NT.

West leads the AK of D and continues with the 7 for p to ruff . (West started with AK72)

East returned the ten of H. Declarer took the Ace and played the Q of S.

East took the Ace and played the 2 of H to the J and K.

Declarer played the Q of D and East ruffed with the J and South discarded the club loser. Now east played the Q of H to promote the remaining 9x trumps in his p's hand...

Down 1! bad play? Or just sweet defence?

I think it's quite poor play... After such start you just have to play your ♠s for 1 loser, and the way south plays is pure giving away a 2nd ♠ trick. So after ♥K just finesse ♠. The only remaining question is: do you play low to the 7 or low to the T? Guarding against a 4-2 split against East might be a better line, but you still don't know what card West will hold. All by all, I think playing low to the T gives us most chance to make that contract.

bad play. At the time EAST trumps with the spade JACK.. there are only two spades left out, and you have SPADE KQT7. You overruff, and have 8 sure tricks.... four spades, 2hearts, and two clubs. The loser on loser can never give you a ninth tricks, and as you discovered, might turn eight winners into seven.

Sometimes, counting is easy... this is one of those times.
