This thread is to discuss interesting or problem hands from the First Beginner/Novice Tourment at BBO... which was tournment 83... 11 AM EST, June 21.

Board 2 was instrumental for the winners in their march to the championship. Holding the following hand as EAST, raj21 showed good matchpoint judgement by sacraficing over 3NT by NS...

NS have 10 top tricks in 3NT for +630. 4H's was lukcy a lucky contract, partenr had the spade Queen and both majors were split 3-3, so it can only be set one trick... but even down three would have been a win.
If you were East, did you open 1H? The hand has only 10 hcp, but it has lots of offesne with 6-5 distribution. Shw did well not rebidding his Ten high seven card diamond suit or running to 4S with Qx of spades and x of hearts.

Interesting hand, Ben, ;D.
There are lessons to be learned from many of the contracts it was played in!
While it would be inappropriate to comment on individual mistakes, I would recommend using the hand viewer and Deep Finesse to get an idea of how play could be improved.

I don't know when to open with a void, especially without aces. Does anyone have an easy rule to remember? If I held that hand above, I probably would not have opened, but would have tried to show the major 2 suiter later...

Hi, I use the rule of 20. Count your high card points, and the cards in your longest two suits. If the total equals 20, consider opening.
I modify this with 1) subtracting a point for singleton or doubleton Q or jack.
2) subtract a point for empty long suits... things like
Kxxxx or Qxxx or xxxxx, you need etc. Two honors are better than one. And 9's are useful (K9xxx really is better than Kxxxx).
3) Add a point for two tens in both of the long suits.
The hand in question had 10 hcp "good suit" and 6-5 distribution. This comes to 21 points by rule of 20, so I would open.
