Cross IMPS, no one vul.

First decision: double or 2 and do you consider it clear?

Double. Unanimous! Even a squid doesn't need four hearts.

Ok, good. I elected to double but I thought there might be some naysayers. The auction proceeds:

What's your agreement?

If partner's X is responsive I bid 4N (Pick a minor), and if it's penalty, well, there's really only green cards in my future.

Is partner denying 4 hearts? Just showing 'points'? I'd pass.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

Partner's X is just values and not penalty but I still have a clear pass, the ace of spades is a big clue about that as well as Axxxx of clubs.

COME ON MAN.

First Dbl is very easy.

Imo the 2nd decision is closer, but since I have 3 tricks in hand at equal vulnerability, and no guarantees that we can make any 5-level contract, I'd just pass.

Just remembered to post the full hand. The winning action at the second term is 4NT. Opps are cold for 5. Me and p ended up in a pretty horrid slam but going off was a bucket load of IMPs when the other tables were in 4x+1 N.

Looking at the EW hands only, you want to defend 4X.

you can't bid on the assumption the hand's as spicy as this. if you never concede anything ending in 90, you're declaring too much.

The winning action is for West to say 4NT (the obvious bid). That will probably lead to 5 doubled -650 for 1 imp in.
