can't double then bid suit naturally responder can pick off your suit

After 2-? it seems I can't bid hearts naturally, 2 hearts doesn't show heart length and promises diamond and spade length. Just because responder bid my suit doesn't mean they should get to turn my bids into cue bids. Only cue bid of the doubled opening suit should be artificial, not both.

Also, it seems the range for 2 is too broad. Most hands that can bid 2 ought to have bid 1; I wouldn't object if North stuck a 1 bid in although I guess pass is OK too. But it seems the range for 2 should be something like 4-6 total points, as it can't really have 7-8 which should have bid already?

Yes, that does sound strange, you've shown some with your double you should be able to bid naturally.
The sequence 1-P-1-2 is defined as natural on GIB CC as would 2. So it accepts the possibility in some instances.
