I wish I bid 3 fit jump last round. But now having bid 3 I pull to 4. I'd like to pull to 4 to offer that, but partner might not know I have spades support (versus a good hand fishing for 3nt with club stopper).

4, I see one trick on defense and anywhere from 3-8 on offense.

4 is clear, unless partner stood up on his chair and bellowed "DOUBLE" at the top of his lungs over 4.

(I might even bid 4 if he did that)

4 as you have absolutely no defense against 4 . For 4 doubled to be right, partner likely has to 4+ tricks in his own hand. Unfortunately, the 3 cue makes partner think you have some values.

If you're weren't going to show on this hand, did you consider bidding 4 initially?

No fit jump, I thought we only played fit jumps by a passed hand. I know better now.

Looks like both your opponents are lunatics. Even so, what are you leading against 4x? It looks like south can ruff three spades in dummy for down only two. Meanwhile 4 has decent chances despite the trump situation.

As you already know, S didn't have a 2 overcall. You can't allow unusual actions by mp opps to cause you to start changing the way you bid your hands.

Btw, I wouldn't have used a fit jump on this hand even if it were available (which it would be for me in most partnerships). I'd bid a quiet 2 in order to keep the bidding low. Of course, there's a risk that LHO is going to raise clubs, and thus undo my attempt to save space. On a bad day he bids 5 and I haven't shown my spades yet! But as your partner, I would not expect such a heart suit for a fit jump...I'd definitely expect stronger hearts (and shorter as well, but it's the strength that is important for me), so I don't think that a fit jump really helps partner with valuation so I'd hope that either LHO passes over 2 or bids 3 or 4 clubs.

As it was, you had to pull. It will be a long time before your partner has that sort of defensive trump holding on this kind of bidding :P

One reason that there are so many bad players playing is that bridge is probabilistic: even horrible actions sometimes give rise to great results. Your S no doubt feels that he or she was brilliant rather than idiotic. Let him or her enjoy the feeling....he or she is a very weak player (or was just goofing around). Don't think that you have 'learned something' about pulling doubles.

Hopefuly this is your understatement of the year :) When ever I made overcalls like this I'd get caught out, such as the one still fresh in
my memory from my first trip to Penticton. I went for something like -1400 in my first teams event after a 2C overcall like this one.

If I had just 3 card spade support 2H looks like a very reasonable bid but after that will I ever convince partner I have 4 card support for his suit?
I thought it was best to show the 4 card support immediately.
