Playing 2/1 with a 15-17 1NT and a 20-21 2NT, what's your plan as dealer? I know what the KnR evaluator says, what do you say?

I know some excellent players who would, I think, open this 2N. I know of no decent player who would dream of opening 1 and rebidding 3.

My own choice is to open 1 and rebid 2N. My partners are aggressive in accepting this invite, so I won't miss too many games. Moreover, while I usually play a complex method over 2N, I think that bidding after 1 1x 2N can be done fairly well (I like transfers here, with some simple bells and whistles, but reverse wolff isn't hopeless and there are others).

More to the point, I am not so sold on this being a notrump hand, especially if the opps hold most of the missing hcp, that I want to really limit the chances of finding a club contract as much as I would by opening 2N.

Put another way: if a partner of mine opened 2N, I wouldn't be the least upset even if we got a bad result as a result. If I had to score the bids: I wouldn't give either approach 100: 1 then 2N 95, 2N 90, 1 then 3 10.

I agree with Mike H. I want to get clubs in here. My partners don't pass my 2nt rebids with even a faint summer breeze, but we have good methods (transfers) here to sort out responder's hand types.

Did I start with Michaels? Did I cuebid until partner was forced to pick one of my suits? No, I was just playing with Brian (6S made when the trump king dropped singleton)." David Wright

Mikeh - great post as always. I agree - I am somewhat concerned that we might still miss a slam here even bidding 1C then rebidding 2N.

(Not on post but - for some Precision players 1 followed by 3 is a stretch, but viable...)
