The reason to stay off the spade is that we may be blowing a trick in the suit. However, on some layouts where that is true, declarer can endplay us anyway. Meantime, if the hand is something like AJxx Kxxx Axxxx void opposite 10xx AQJxx Kxx Ax we'd better establish our spade trick.
