My hand is better suited to clubs than to notrump or hearts. I would bid 1N with 5422 and 2♥ with three hearts and a singleton.

My hand is very sharp and distributional; thus oriented to suit play.

2♣ for me, although the lack of raise by RHO tells me that either a) pard has some spade cards and/or length, pard has some extra values. or c) LHO has extra length in spades and some values.

In A, 1N is better. With B, my call is neutral, since I'll probably hear a cue by pard at my next turn. With C, I definitely like 2♣, since LHO will probably pass 1N and lead his suit with 100 honors and entry. For those that bid 1N, what are you going to do if LHO cracks it?

Very tough problem and I could be swayed either way. At MP's, 1N is 100%

Hehe, the problem is you are very optimistic to open 1C, thinking u have a shapy hand, but now you have to rebid 1N. If pd raise u to 2N, I am sure you wont be happy and most of time this 2N will have no play.

This is kind of hand I wouel regret to open, though I understand many posters here would think this is an automatic opening.

If LHO cracks 1NT and this comes floating back to me, I will REDOUBLE to suggest two places to play. If partner bids 2♣, great. If partner bids 2♦, even beter. Partner sure as heck better not bid 2♥... I can always run to hearts if I can't stand 2♦.

hum... no one mentioned my table choice of 2♦

I didn't bid 1NT because pard was a passed hand, so 7-8 hcp on him was possible, which would make me play 1NT vuln on 18-19 points. Another problem of 1NT is if pard "corrects" to 2♥ with 5 cards, playing me a doubleton.

2♣ was out to me as well because pard, who rates to have 2-3 spades and 8-9 cards in the red suits, could hardly have more than a doubleton club, and could very easily have a singleton (3451/3541 shape).

So that left 2♦. It is likely that pard has 4 diamonds, and can very well have 5 (2452/3451). Even opposite 4 diamonds there must be a play for it. The "hand of death" is pard having a 2533/3532, but then again you're in a guess anyway.

Beware of 2♦, Whereagles, I think it's a kind of reverse if you play StdAm, while non-forcing in Acol (correct me if I'm wrong).

With forcing freebids, I bid 2♣. With negative freebids 1NT.

2D is not a reverse. You are raising partner's diam. But I think 2C is best here. You can't pass 1SX.
1N is poor with 10hcp and 1h. Where would you get tricks? If your club suit does not work, you might only get 3 or 4 tricks. If your club suit does work, you want to be in clubs anyway.
2C any style of scoring.

♦ are as good as ♥ to me on competitive auctions, 2♥ wouldn´t be reverse so 2♦ wouldn´t as well, on the other hand partner may double with 4♦ and 2♥ as well as reversed.
